Miss Tourism Contestants Get Victoria University Scholarships

Ten out of the 24 contestants at the recently concluded Miss Tourism Uganda won themselves scholarships at Victoria University.

The university vice-chancellor Assoc. Prof. Krishna N. Sharma made the announcing at Kampala Serena Hotel during the pageant crowning.

“At Victoria University, we support beauty with brains. Such pageants help people gain confidence. And as partners of Miss Tourism Uganda, we would like to announce special scholarships for the top ten contestants,” Dr. Sharma said.

The girls will study any of the courses taught at the university.

The University has four faculties – faculty of business and management, faculty of health sciences, faculty of science and technology and faculty of social sciences.

The university also has a department of petroleum studies where it offers degrees, diplomas and short courses teaching matters of oil and gas.

Miss Tourism Uganda 2019 was won by Phionah Kyeru from Busoga sub-region. She was followed by Prossy Agwang and Jane Akullo in first and second runner up positions.

University Offers First Aid Skills Training To Rally Drivers

Rally drivers and their co-drivers will now get specialized and well research first aid skills training at Victoria University, Vice-Chancellor Assoc. Prof. Krishna N Sharma has said.

The pledge to support the rally fraternity was made when officials visited the university to discuss the details of the growing working relationship.

Dr. Sharma said a 4 hours free short course training will be offered to drivers they will be equipped with first aid skills as they prepare for the forthcoming rally in Hoima.

Victoria University under its faculty of health sciences is making leaps in the field of science, research and offering practical health solutions through publications.

The partnership with motorsport is not an act of isolation, the university has in the recent past signed MoUs with Uganda Cricket Association and basketball association.

Uganda Cricket players, both girls and boy, now have an opportunity to further their education at no cost after Victoria University.

The university will help with the psychological performance assessment and analysis of the senior men national team.

“As a research university, we have resources that can allow us to add value to sports institutions through research on modern performance-enhancing techniques.

Our relationship is also being extended to the top cricketers as well as their immediate family members so that we can have a positive impact on the lives of these players’ Dr. Sharma said.

Dr. Sharma said the university is well connected with motorsport because the university promoter Rajiv Ruparelia recently kick-started his rallying career and is doing well.

Rajiv recently graduated to the Club Man Rally Championship (CRC) category in the National Rally Championship (NRC) events.

“I have always felt ripe to take on the big competition, but am glad I can finally join. If the rules allow, then we shall be able to take on the Fort Portal event,” Rajiv said after getting the news of the promotion.

Ykee Benda, Lydia Jazmine & Big Trill To Perform at Ascot Goat Races.

The Royal Ascot Goat Races happening next month will have Ykee Benda, Lydia Jazmine & Big Trill performing at rightly ‘the biggest social networking event of the year’, organizers Ruparelia Group, revealed in a shared press release.  

The Goat Races will take place October 12 at its traditional Speke Resort Munyonyo where the three singers are tasked to spice up the day with their energetic performance while the goats race.

While the goats will be competing on the race tracks, and entertainers performing in-between breaks, the event will also have numerous games and competitions.

Speke Resort Munyonyo has announced that this year, there will a new hotdog eating competition addition where participants stand a chance to win up to Shs200, 000.

Like it has been the case over the years, the Goat Races will be big on fashion with revellers who will have put in an extra effort to uniquely dress win prizes from the different sponsors and organizers.

Tickets to the show are available at Speke Apartments and Munyonyo, Kabira for only Shs50, 000 as well as ticket giveaways on Sanyu Fm.

 

 

University Offers Ten Scholarships To Cricket Association

Victoria University will offer ten scholarships to Uganda Cricket Association for every academic year.

This comes after the two entities signed a memorandum of understanding to concrete their relationship.

The signing of the MOU took place on the 6th floor at the University premises on Jinja Road on Tuesday.

Uganda Cricket Chairman Ansasira Bashir said they have been failing to perform well at international stage ‘because of our mental preparedness.’

“Therefore, when Victoria University offered to help us in this area using their resources we couldn’t turn it down.

We look forward to making sure that we grow the relationship to inspire upcoming cricketers and also spur a generation of cricketers that is well educated,” Ansasira said.

In an earlier engaged between the two entities, it was revealed that the university will help with the psychological performance assessment and analysis of the senior men national team. 

The association officials said this was unprecedented and that psychosocial analysis important part of the sport. They said this will help players to also prepare for life after playing cricket.

Victoria University vice Chancellor, Assoc Prof. Krishna N. Sharma said a modern sportsman can no longer rely on his physical ability alone.

“As a research university we have resources that can allow us to add value to sports institutions through research on modern performance-enhancing techniques.

Our relationship is also being extended to the top cricketers as well as their immediate family members so that we can have a positive impact on the lives of these players’

The signed MOU has no definite time limit with the agreement in place for as long as both entities want it to continue.

This means that this relationship is binding the institutions together for a very long time.

The initial offer is for 10 scholarships for both girls and boys on a partial basis and on a whole basis for special and exceptional cases.

This relationship offers emerging players who play the game to get a shot at world-class university education while also playing their passion.

Kony-Orders from Above: Movie Selected For Oscar Awards

A Ugandan movie ‘Kony- Order from Above’ has been selected for the 92nd Academy Awards.

Popularly known as the Oscars and given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States of America (USA), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership.

The movie was selected on Wednesday by the Uganda Academy Selection Committee (USASC) as Uganda’s official entry for the 2020 Oscar Awards in the category of best international film.

This marks the very first time Uganda is submitting an entry to the prestigious awards following the launch of the seven-member UASC in July this year.

“The selection is only provisional pending the film’s fulfillment of all academy eligibility criteria ahead of the October 1, 2019 Oscar submission deadline for the country entries,” said Godfrey Musinguzi, UASC Chairperson in a statement dated September 11, 2019.

Adding, “The film’s human story , universal themes and authenticity make it a unique piece of home grown art worthy of celebrating on the global platform that is the Oscars.”

Upon selection, Steve T Ayeny, the movie director said he was so happy to achieve such a milestone.

“I feel like God has been faithful to Uganda. This is the first of its kind and I am very happy about this. This is bigger than me as the director and producer. God was in it from day one. I want to thank my crew, cast and everyone who supported this film. As someone who hails from Northern Uganda I wanted to tell our story our own way just to spread love and encourage people to forgive each other focus on the transition and development in Northern Uganda,” revealed Ayeny.

About movie:

This movie drama based on actual happenings tells a story of two youth, Otti and Aguti who fall in love during the tumultuous northern Uganda Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency.

They are however separated when Otti is abducted at age 11. While in abduction, Otti attempts to escape back home and is instead caught and battered at each attempt.

He decides to stay in the bush with the LRA rebels and is soon introduced into the inner command circle of notorious LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony’s. Despite his concession to notoriety, his love for Aguti remained undeterred.  In an attempt to sustain it, Otti wrote letters to Aguti through the village reverend.

During the LRA raid to Aboke Girls School, Aguti and other girls are then abducted.

Upon arrival at the Kony camp, the abductees are shown to Kony who falls in love with Aguti instantly without knowledge of the relationship between her and Otti.

Kony Movie Selected For Oscar Awards Set For Cinema

A Ugandan movie ‘Kony-Order from Above’ that was last week selected for the 92nd Academy Awards alias Oscars is going to be in cinemas for seven consecutive days starting this Friday 20 to 26 September, 2019.

The premiering will take place at Century Cinemax Acacia Mall Kisementi at 5pm.

The movie was selected by the Uganda Academy Selection Committee (USASC) as Uganda’s official entry for the 2020 Oscar Awards in the category of Best International film.

This marks the very first time Uganda is submitting an entry to the prestigious awards following the launch of the seven-member UASC in July this year.

Given out annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States of America (USA), the Oscars are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

According to Godfrey Musinguzi, UASC Chairperson, the seven day screening is part of the eligibility criteria, a selected movie needs to undergo ahead of the October 1, 2019 Oscar submission deadline for all country entries.

“We implore all the relevant government agencies, cultural entities, the media and every Ugandan to support the film to meet all its outstanding requirements, including showing at the cinema for at least seven consecutive days, before the deadline,” said Mr Musinguzi in a statement dated September 11, 2019.

Set in the heart of the brutal LRA war of Northern Uganda, the film tells the story of two young abductees and lovers who must fight to keep their love alive amid chaos and horror.

“The film's human story, universal themes and authenticity make it a unique piece of homegrown art worthy of celebrating on the global platform that is the Oscars,” revealed Mr Musinguzi.

Rajiv Ruparelia Recognized At India Day

For his exploits in motor rally sport this year, youthful businessman Rajiv Ruparelia was recognized at the India Day with the Indian Achievers’ Award 2019 for the Upcoming Sports Personality award.

The event, organised by the Indian Association of Uganda, recently took place at Kololo Airstrip.

Rajiv has managed to win two out of the three motor rallies he has been part. On his debut in May, he came out second.

And for that success inside the cockpit, Rajiv was promoted to Club Man Rally Championship (CRC) category in National Rally Championship (NRC) races this season.

“I decided to join rallying just to feed my strong passion for motorsport. But also I want to have fun. And rallying is not something you just wake up and take on. I decided to join a rally school to get myself equipped with some experience,” he revealed recently. 

Victoria University Enters Into Partnership With Cricketers

Just days after forming a super partnership with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA), Victoria University in a bid to promote sports in Uganda has entered into another similar partnership with the Uganda Cricket Association.

In this partnership, the University will help with the psychological performance assessment and analysis of the senior men national team. The selected players visited the University head office for their 1st test.

The association officials said this was unprecedented and that psychosocial analysis important part of the sport. They said this will help players to also prepare for life after playing cricket.

It has also been revealed that as part of this arrangement, Victoria University will also offer 15 scholarships (70% discount on tuition fees) to cricket players - both girls and boys who have finished high school.

The Royal Ascot Goat Races is one of Uganda’s most popular social events. It is is an event of merrymaking and extravagant fashion.

 “The Goat Races are more than just another event in Uganda, it’s a place where people can come and network and mix along with business, pleasure and have a fun humorous time with good food and drinks all day long,” Ruparelia Group’s Managing Director Rajiv Ruparelia, the organisers of the event, said at launch in June at Kabira Country Club.

The goat races will entail eight races over the course of the day, with each race featuring eight goats. Anyone can sponsor a race, or buy a goat to participate in a race. The proceeds generated from the races will then go to a selected charity.

Races go for anything between Shs6m and Shs10m while goats go for between Shs500, 000 and Shs1m. Already, Gold Star, Euroflex and Orient Bank have already acquired goats of their own.

Away from the goats racing, the event boasts a rich tradition as the most exuberant unofficial fashion showcase in Uganda, and the organisers expect no different this year.

Kuol Pieng Seizing Talent Nurturing Opportunity At Victoria University

Sometimes all you need for your breakthrough is an environment that understands your ambitions, believes in you and provides you with the necessary platform and facilitation to see you succeed.

And for William Kuol Pieng Deng, a young South Sudan student, Victoria University, where he studies a Bachelors of Computer Sciences and Technology, has been a blessing to his musical ambitions.

The 22-year-old Victoria University student from Abyei (Pajok Abior), in Rumbek, South Sudan, in an interview with Command Post 1 reveals that he started singing early this year in March.

The singer, who goes by the stage name K’Cious Afriqanboy, explains that this music journey started off with deeper research and understanding of the South Sudan music industry from January 2018 to February 2019.

When undertaking this research Kuol Pieng discovered that many artists in South Sudan sung dancehall and Afro-Dancehall. He chose to do RnB music.

"What drew me to music was to change the South Sudan music industry and take it to another level of international," he said in an interview with Command Post 1.

Kuol Pieng loves music because it’s a message that runs through the body mind and soul. And this message can be expressed through singing. He says that music is emotions that consist of love, sadness, happiness and so much more.

When he started out in March 2019, Kuol Pieng released a song titled forever. On this song, he collaborated with a friend called Heavy Treys, a Ugandan. He would later add on songs like Letter, Reason, and Right Tim featuring Shamah.

As a student, this music success has not come without the nurturing and support of Victoria University where he is a student. According to the student, the University funds the recording of audios and shooting of videos for his songs. This is no mean feat.

He supplements this generosity from the University by performing at shows and parties.

He explains that he joined Victoria University because it had all the facilities a good University should have. He first got to know about the Ruparelia group owned University from his family members and through social media.

And now it looks like this was a pathway to his greatness.

The second-year student is also a minister of constitutional affairs at the students’ guild council. This leadership responsibility also means he is a busy student juggling university’s politics and his music career. However, he says he is in a position to handle all.

“Well, balancing my books and music is hard because they say you cannot serve two masters at the same time. But I have a way that I use to balance both. Music is my happiness and with it I can read well and understand quickly.”

Victoria University has also helped him promote his music and offered bigger platforms to perform and sell his music to bigger audiences. Through Victoria University, he has been able to share the same with big Ugandan artists like Ykee Benda and Fefe Busi.

The university is also planning to arrange an international collaboration with an artist from India.

This music adventure was orchestrated by the Victoria University Vice-chancellor Dr Krishna who connected Kuol Pieng to the yet to be named Indian artist. Apparently, this work is already in progress, including the recording of the duet.

Like any ambitious dreamer, Kuol Pieng wants to dominate South Sudan musically and become a big global name in the RnB music genre.
