Dr Joan Babalanda Wanyama, the head of department of surgery at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital says that since Monday they have received more than three hundred patients from the districts of Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kagadi, , Masindi, Buliisa and Kiryandongo Hundreds of patients are set to receive free surgery at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
The week-long surgical camp that started on Tuesday morning is organised by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda-ASOU. The camp will be carried out by thirty surgeons under ASOU.
The camp is targeting patients suffering from Hernia, Thyroids, Body swellings and general surgical elective operations among others.
Dr Joan Babalanda Wanyama, the Head of department of surgery at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital says that since Monday they have received more than three hundred patients from the districts of Bunyoro region which includes Kiryandongo, Buliisa, Kagadi, Masindi, Kibaale and Kakumiro.
He says that the initiative is aimed at bringing surgical services nearer to the unprivileged people who lack funds.
Dr John Sekabira, the president ASOU, says that the surgical camp will be annual to ensure that patients with surgical complications are operated and treated at free costs.
He, however, says their activities are being constrained by lack of enough funds since the drugs needed to operate and treat the patients are too expensive.
James Kugonza 53, a resident of Kinuunda Village in Kakumiro district says that he spent 5 years suffering from Hernia. He was on Tuesday morning operated by the team.
He wants the government to support the operations of the association because many people still have some complications like mine and they don’t money for the operation.
Hundreds of residents with different sorts of ailments have been flocking the medical camp since Sunday evening to benefit from the specialised medical services being offered by a team of surgeons under the association of surgeons of Uganda.
Earthfinds visited the facility for the fisrt day and found over 500 patients had by 5pm Monday arrived at the facility waiting to receive the medical services.
The Hoima Hospital regional hospital director Peter Mukobi says medics will offer both major and minor surgery to patients.
Dr. Denis Bitamazire, the camp chairman says the surgeons have now decided to offer the free services at Hoima RRH, Kyangwali Health Centre IV, Buliisa Health Centre IV and Kiryandongo district hospital.
He adds that the over 80 surgeons had planned to offer free services at all health centre IVs but this cannot be possible due to limited resources.
