Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA) has rewarded seven young innovators in Bunyoro region for their efforts in fighting unemployment and contributing to social economic development of the country.
Under the Bunyoro Youth Innovation Awards 2018, only nine innovators were rewarded from the 22 finalists of the over 100 entries from the seven districts of Bunyoro region.
Robert Kaahwa, who runs a carpentry workshop dubbed RK Finetudes and Molding in Kiryatete, a Hoima town suburb, emerged as the overall winner for this year’s awards.
Kaahwa formally an employee at Hoima Kolping Hotel was rewarded with a cash prize of sh1 million, a plaque and a certificate for his outstanding work.
Other winners are; Sise Nambuzi, won the PWD category, Rosemary Wabyona, Charity Kenyange, Ismail Senteza, David Muliisa, Gloria Kyaliisima and William Kasaija.
Officiating the ceremony at Glory summit hotel, Mary Grace Mugasa, the Hoima municipal mayor challenged the youth innovators to improve their marketing strategies saying she was shocked to discover that there are many youth innovators whose service remain unknown.
Veronica Namwanje, the executive secretary USSIA says the program was aimed at promoting competition and quality among the youth innovators in Bunyoro. She asks innovators to embrace formalizing their enterprises, embracing learning new skills among others.
Aminah Bukenya appealed to the youth to embrace this innovation because it has come in the wright track while oil and gas is going to be drilled in their area which will make them benefite from it.
