Petroleum Authority of Uganda-PAU Tyesday trained Bunyoro business community on local content opportunities in the oil and gas sector ahead of the oil production phase.
Opening a one day training at Hoima Resort Hotel, Dr Kaliisa Kabgambe, the senior presidential advisor on Oil, Gas and Minerals observed that the time for preparation is now since over $20 billion are expected to be invested in the oil development after the Final Investment Decision is reached mid this year.
Dr Kaliisa who tipped the participants through the expected opportunities and how to tap into them emphasized the need to invest in agriculture, accommodation, health and trade services saying these opportunities are reality.
Dr Kaliisa challenged Bunyoro community to acquire the necessary skills and invest accordingly basing on their areas of interest but warned on standards.
Betty Namubiru, the National Content Manager at Petroleum Authority of Uganda said the authority is committed at strengthening community awareness to ensure there is visible participation by Ugandans.
According to her, the Authority is going to open a regional office in Buliisa to help in coordinating the authority’s activities in the Albertine graben.
She emphasized the need for Bunyoro community to register their companies at the National supplier’s data base and Talent register to get known that they interested in supplies and jobs in the oil sector.
Meanwhile the participants called for special consideration for communities in Bunyoro to benefit from the oil resource.
Moses Byenkya, the district coordinator for Hoima district farmers association said such engagements should be regular to ensure farmers get the necessary information regarding the sector. He said sometimes there is no clear information on the existing opportunities.
