Bagyenda Finally Dumped From FIA board

Justine Bagyenda Justine Bagyenda

Justine Bagyenda, the former executive director Bank of Uganda in charge of supervision has been dropped from the proposed list of people who will make up the doard of Financial Intelligence Authority, reported online news publisher, The Nile Post

The finance minister Matia Kasaija coated controversy when he named the embattled Bagyenda on the FIA despite the former central bank strong woman being investigated by the same authority over cases related to money laundering. It now looks liek Kasaija has bowed down to pressure from the public and dropped Bagyenda.

Bagyenda didn’t make any matters easy for Kasaija when she failed to show up at Appointments Committee of parliament in September for vetting. She claimed to be out of the country by leaked data of her mobile phone showed she was transacting her business as usual in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb.

It is not clear who will replace Bagyenda but the other proposed names on the FIA board are Grace Akullo, the head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Patricia Mutesi, Leo Kibirango, the board chairman and Patrick Ocailap, the deputy secretary to the Treasury.

The Nile Post says Bagyenda’s woes began after a whistleblower petitioned the IGG claiming she had stashed away Shs 19 billion on three different bank accounts. The ombudsman started an investigation which is still ongoing.
