Economic Forum To Discuss Income Inequality

Industry experts, leaders in government, academia and the private sector from across East Africa will meet at the third LéO Africa Economic Forum to be held in Kampala at Kampala Serena Conference Centre on 22 July, 2016. 

 The LéO Africa Economic Forum is an annual gathering that meets to discuss the state of the economy in the region. The Forum over the past two years has addressed pertinent issues related to the extractives industry in East Africa. 

The 2016 forum, to be held under the theme: “Leave No One Behind: Promoting inclusive economic growth & decent employment for all by 2030” will be organized by the LéO Africa institute with support from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and United Nations in Uganda. 

“This year’s forum will focus on what economies in the East African region should do to stem the growing income inequality that is threatening regional security and stability,” says Kwezi Tabaro, the programmes coordinator at the LéO Africa institute. 

The one-day event is expected to attract speakers from Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, and over 200 participants who will at the end of the conference sign a commitment to champion the need for equitable and inclusive economic growth and creation of meaningful employment for all working age East Africans. 

“Platforms like the Economic Forum on East Africa provide us an opportunity to engage the business sector in the region on what both the private and public sector can do to enhance inclusive economic growth that creates employment opportunities for our young people,” says Awel Uwihanganye, the Senior Director and Co-founder at LéO Africa.

Victoria University To Host Urban Governance Dialogue, Career Day

Victoria University with support from AVSI Uganda has once again partnered with Centre for Urban Studies and Research in organizing its 2nd Public Dialogue on Good Urban Governance and Youth Participation.

The guest speakers at the dialogue will be Mr. Anderson Howard Mugisa the Founder Member and Executive Director of the Federation of Young Entrepreneurs Uganda (FYEU) and Mr. Samuele Otim Rizzo Chief of Party SKY- Skilling Youth for Employment in Agri-Business AVSI Foundation.

The theme of the public dialogue is “Unlocking Youth Potential through ICTs in Good Urban Governance”. The event shall be held on Friday May 27th 2016, at the university campus on Jinja Road, 8:30am - 4:30pm

Victoria University has lined up powerful experts to present at Career Day

Victoria University invites students, youth groups and women groups, civil society organizations, government ministries, departments and agencies, private sector organizations, academicians, political leaders, local governments, NGOs & CBOs to the dialogue.

In the same spirit, the University will also host vacists, A’ level & O' level holiday makers, parents & career teachers at what they have called Career Day at Victoria University campus on 28th May 2016.

Guest speakers at the Career Day will include James Saaka, Executive Director, National Information Technology Authority-Uganda and Dr. Sabrina Kitaka, Senior Lecturer Dept Of Paediatrics, Makerere University College Of Health Sciences; Mulago Hospital.

Others are Andrew Mwenda, a leading Ugandan journalist, founder and owner of the independent, a current affairs newsmagazine and Ethan Mussolini, a renowned motivational speaker.

These experts will speak to students about making the right career choices, setting life’s goals and living a purposeful life. Entrance to the Career Day is free and the event will start at 9:00am-4:00pm.

Victoria University Public Dialogue To Debate Urban Governance

 

Issues of urban governance will dominate a public dialogue organized by Victoria University in partnership with the Centre for Urban Studies and Research. The meeting will take place on 7th April 2016, at Victoria University main campus, Jinja Road, Kampala, starting at 2.00pm and end at 5.30Pm.

Participants will discuss and share knowledge on how good urban governance and management can be promoted to improve service delivery, reduce urban poverty, improve urban productivity, create jobs for youth, address the challenge of climate change, establish inclusive cities and achieve the 17 newly introduced United Nations Sustainable Development Goals among others.

Professor Sabiiti Makara of Makerere University, as guest speaker, will headline the public dialogue under the theme ‘Promoting Good Urban Governance in Uganda: Challenges and Opportunities’.

Other participants will include government officials, political leaders, policy makers, development partners, academia, town managers, practitioners and urban governance researchers and all interested parties.

A panel of experts comprising of Dr. Ian Senkatuka (Chairperson National Physical Planning Board), Dr. Kiggundu Amin (Makerere University/Centre for Urban Studies and Research) and Mr. Samuel Mabala, (Cities Alliance’s Country Manager in Uganda), will identify and discuss emerging urban governance and management issues together with the audience.

Specifically, the public dialogue aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Provide a deeper understanding of what good urban governance is to the participants.
  • Raise public awareness about the emerging urban governance and management issues and challenges
  • Identify best practices that could be adopted in Uganda for better management of towns and cities
  • Identify key areas that require capacity building for better service delivery in towns and cities
  • Provide a platform for various stakeholders including urban managers, the private sector, political leaders, civil society organizations, academia and development partners to network and share knowledge.

Victoria University Introduces Program To Engage A ‘level Leavers

 

Victoria University, the fastest growing private university in Uganda, believes that they have a responsibility to offer professional guidance to secondary school leavers. For that matter, together with Success Africa Limited they have organized a five day Leavers’ Plugin training.

They are going to use the program to equip vacists with skills in public speaking and presentation; personal grooming and branding; choices and decision making; financial literacy; talent and alternative careers; life planning and Self-leadership

The program starts Monday 28th March to 1st April 2016 at Victoria University campus. To be part of this program, students are paying Shs100, 000. Over 300 students are expected to attend.  The lead facilitator of the training is Ethan Musolini, a renowned motivational speaker and trainer.

Musolini, also the CEO of Success Africa, will be joined by university lecturers and other experienced and inspiring personalities. Oscar Kamukama, the marketing and recruitment specialist at Victoria University, explained that the Leavers Plugin is aimed at keeping students busy and informed during their long holiday.

“We are a university and schools are a feeder for universities. So we target S5 and S6 students because these are guys who will be joining Universities tomorrow. We don’t want them when they are coming to study, we want them in a raw format so that we can grow with them.” Oscar explained why they are engaging the vacists.
