Farmers In Bunyoro Tipped On Warehouse Receipting

By George Busiinge Farmers in the Albertine Graben region have been encouraged to embrace the warehouse receipting system. According to Deborah Kyarasiime, the Managing Director of Uganda Warehouse Receipt System Authority (UWRSA), this will help them to tackle post-harvest losses and price exploitation. Kyarasiime observed that farmers in the region experience low prices during harvesting. She noted that farmers lack access to affordable credit and market information. Kyarasiime was today addressing leaders and stakeholders from Bunyoro region during a sensitization and popularization meeting held at Kontiki Hotel in Hoima city. Kyarasime said UWRSA is interested in storage infrastructure in the region to handle post-harvests. She observed that most warehouses in the area are dilapidated while others are not up to standard. Currently, Kakumiro has 18 storage structures, Hoima district 32, Hoima City 6, Kikuube and Kiryandongo 6, and Masindi 28, while Buliisa has 1 storage structure. She added that UWRSA…

Finance Ministry Positive Oil & Gas Will Resuscitate Economy

The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED) is optimistic that the oil and gas industry which is has reached the development phase will spur the recovery of the country’s economy. Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary & Secretary to the Treasury at MoFPED, recently speaking at the Dialogue on Public Debt & Development in Kampala said growth will be driven primarily by activities in oil & gas sector. Ggoobi also revealed that the real GDP growth will increase to over 7 percent at the start of commercial oil production. Uganda discovered oil and gas in the Albertine Graben in western Uganda in 2006 but hasn’t been able to pump it out of the ground. Police Officers Get Oil & Gas Protection Training

A group of 270 Crisis Response Team (CRT) Police officers underwent Oil and Gas protection training at Olilim Counter Terrorism Police Training School in Katakwi district. The group that was passed out at an event on Friday consisted of 33 female police officers from the rank of Superintendent of Police to the Police Constable. They were training alongside another group of 70 Scene of Crime Officer- SOCOs who underwent forensic services training. Dhikusoko Awali, the Acting Commandant of Olilim Counter Terrorism Police Training School, said that the training was conducted to equip officers with skills to enhance security in areas that have oil and gas activities. He revealed that officers were equipped with the concepts of counter terrorism, use of specialized equipment and arms in the oil and gas installations. Friday Night Road Accident Claims Life Of Hoima's LC5 Chairperson

The Local Council (LC) 5 chairperson of Hoima district, Kadir Karungi, has died in a road accident while driving from Hoima to Kampala. It is not yet what caused the late Friday night accident; police is gathering further information and is yet to make a statement. Preliminary information that one other person believed to be Karungi’s bodyguard was also killed in the fatal accident. The killer accident happened at Kateera on Hoima- Kampala highway.

Retired UPDF Officer encroaches on Nyamigisa wetland in Kikuube District

By George Businge Residents in Nyamigisa Village, Butoole Parish, Kyangwali Sub County in Kikuube district have raised a red flag over the continued destruction of wetlands in the area. The residents say Nyamigisa wetland which is a crucial source of water in the area is vanishing as several people have invaded and occupied it for rice growing. Nyamigisa wetland, measuring approximately 100 acres, residents say has encroached on a high-ranking retired Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) officer who secured its ownership. He has since started renting it to people who are growing rice and tomatoes at three hundred thousand shillings per acre every season. Bosco Kato and other residents are concerned that the continued destruction is going to worsen the water situation and hence the need to protect it. Kato explains that people who are growing rice and tomatoes are using herbicide sprays which are putting their lives at risk.…

The courses to be undertaken include theoretical training in Oil and Gas, Production, Maintenance, as well as Health, Safety and Environment. 31% of the trainees will specialise in Production, 27% in Mechanical Maintenance, 26% in Instrumentation Maintenance, and 16% in Electrical Maintenance. “National content development is at the heart of our operations and underpins our commitment to achieving shared prosperity for Uganda and Ugandans because of this great project. When we launched the Tilenga MOOC in 2021, our objective was clear, to ensure that we maximise awareness and participation of Ugandans in the oil and gas sector,” said Philippe Groueix, General Manager, TotalEnergies EP Uganda. “I am particularly proud to highlight the diversity of the selected trainees,” he added. President Yoweri Museveni, together with officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) led by Dr Ruth Nankabirwa, the minister, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) and Sonatrach, the State Oil Company of Algeria. Eng Dr Michael Mugerwa, the General Manager of Uganda Refinery Holding Company, signed the MoU on behalf of Uganda while Sonatrach Chairman & CEO, Toufik Hakkar signed for Algeria. Fred Balikenda, a resident of Kirama village, in Kigwera Sub County, Buliisa district is a bitter man. His anguish stems from the discovery of oil and gas in his home district Buliisa.
